Shackzilla 2x120W LED - Round 2

 

Hello! Here is my second micro grow diary. I've made some changes, but the principle is still the same - to grow SCROG with LED panels. I selected the best yielder (SZ#2) of last run (Round 1 in signature) as mother plant and used 4 clones to plant them to 15 liter bags.

 

Grow tent

DR60 (60x60x160cm) splitted in two floors, so the actual grow space for plants and pots is 60x60x70cm.

2x 120W LED 6-band (660nm, 630nm, 450nm, 430nm, 410nm, 3500k white, 60 degree lenses)

Prima Klima 230/360m³/h inline fan + 180m³/h active carbon filter

Temperatures around 25 and RH 50-70%.

 

The grow

4x Shackzilla in SCROG (23cm from LED panels to SCROG net)

4x 15 liter PlantinBag

70% soil and 30% clay and 4cm thick clay bottom

Symbiosis mycorrhiza

Sannie's bacto

Buffertablets (3 per 15L PlantinBag)

BAC Bloom-nourishment

 

I'll be using ImageShack instead of OpenGrow album because it compresses the images too much for my liking.

Very nice ledm8. The only thing that come to my mind is that you have too much leaves under the net. That could lead you to mold probs in the future. I would recommend removing them gradually.

Aside that it's very promising. Wish you a good luck. Grabbing a seat. :tu

Looks like a great start! Would the screen have filled 12 /12 from clone? Those shacks look like they stretch alot.

It sure looks like I should have had shorter veg time. Wanted to be sure :tu I'm still bending the branches back under the scrog net. I take leaves off all the time, but should probably do it even more.

great idea on changing the fans, I've got a little 50w UFO with a noisy fan, think I'll put in an antec tri speed fan so I can run it quiet in the winter, and cool in the summer.

 

Those aren't protective grills, they're dust guards, collecting dust is what they're supposed to do, if you leave them off you'll have to pull your panel apart every 2-3 months and use compressed air to blow the dust off the electronics, otherwise it acts as an insulator and leads to overheating.

no real need to take them off, just clean them once a week with a vacuum cleaner or even a damp cloth, problem solved.

Just watched your topic ,

 

I would say 2,5 weeks is enough for veg there i think ,but..... i dont have experience with led and you do :).

 

Sorry ,dont know the dosage appropiate for your schedule.i woud do 2ml a pot first 2 weeks. but i have this plagron batmix.

 

But its nice to see this grow :smoke

Hi what's up people. I've kept a little longer break since last update. Everything is going well I think. The SCROG net is full and the sides have got some nice brances too. I haven't had to use pieces of wire too much, only a few for the side brances. Been just bending them back under the net. Can recommend this type of honeycrumb net for small grows as this is. Plants have got the sweet smell of Shackzilla. Can't think of better smell for a flowering bud.

 

I've seen Sannie saying on other grow diaries that it's not necessary to balance water PH with his soil life products, so I will probably stop doing that too.

Whazzup: Hmm if it uses the forum cache then there shouldn't be difference in using Imageshack or forum album because the images are being downloaded from the same server. Then only image size would affect your download speed. Is there a rule about image size? I will explain why I don't want to use forum album with a comprasion below:

that is exactly the problem. The pictures get too big and then need to be rescaled in the topic. The forum cache does what it should do, cache the pictures. It does not rescale or compress them and that is necessary. So though I appreciate quality, the opengrow picture is 149 kB while your is almost 1 MB (with the same size!). That means your picture, each picture takes 6 times as much time to load and increases the load on the cache server six times. Forget to load this on a mobile device, you will go bankrupt over the data or die of old age before they show :)

Or when there are to big challanges please load them smaller so the page will load faster

Alright, I'll do some testing to find the best solution for everyone. Thanks for explaining this to me. Let's spam some more posts now so we can have another page that has only smaller images :) Wouldn't want people to have any unnecessary reasons to not see the grow.

I stopped balancing the water PH two days ago because I've read that it's not needed with Sannie's products. Is there any risks in doing that in the middle of the grow? The water's PH is about 8 and I used to balance it to 6.

I have:

- Normal soil in bags from the store mixed with lightweight aggregate

- Buffertablets

- Myco

- Bacto

 

And what about the plants that don't have Myco, but all the others?

Ok, did some imagehost testing. I stopped using ImageShack and will use OpenGrow Album from now on as I realize it has lots of good sides. Heavier JPG compression is a bad thing on my red pictures, but I noticed that if you want lossless images you can use PNG format because the album supports it. However the filesizes would be even bigger then so I'll just continue using JPG.

 

I uploaded all of this thread's images to OpenGrow Album. If an admin wants to edit my previous posts I can provide txt links for corrected posts.

 

Weedstiti: Well I wasn't measuring the soil PH anyway and now that I stopped fixing the watering PH it's a lot less job for me.

Yo ledmate.

 

So I looked over your feeding and watering schedule (thanks for that btw, verry helpfull !)

 

And I would want to make some remarks here and there on your request.

 

You said you got a thick layer of clay at the bottom. > That should not be necesary next time.

 

I am all for 30% dried clay chunks in your mix, but you don't want to have a thick layer on the bottom of it when you are growing in pots.

 

Your occasional watering from under per 1.5 liter at a time is quite a killer to your plants, especially in combination with this clay layer.

 

Stick to a rule that goes like: 80 to 90% water from above and only 10 to 20% from under. Since you got that clay layer now, better stick to the lowest percentage for now, maybe even only just about 5 % from under sometimes to avoid drying it up into a crust.

 

The all over amount of water has been a bit too much, you gotto fine tune it still a bit but don't get radical.

 

You are pretty close, but watering canna correctly comes rather precise on pots. It is all about maintaining the right amount of water and oxigine at preferebly all times.> maybe invest in blumat tensiometer to get the feel for how to do it right. (120mb to 150mb during veg, 150mb to 180mb during flowering would be quite uptimal for canna, and then a weekly 80mb with some feed would make them show their love for you for real ;) (mb=millibar as is beeing read on the indicater of the tensiometer)

 

Maybe try a "wick" system during daytime time and try getting a feel for when it is time to remove the strings from your bucket.

"Wick system" = keep bucket with water centrally placed amidst your pots , hang 1cm diameter braided nylon strings in bucket and loop them around your plants along the edges of your pots and burry them some inch or 2 underneath the surface of your soil.( or for now, just top it up with some soil a lill.) > Watch the water level in the bucket go down as they drink and act accordingly by refilling the bucket when seems needed.(only for clean water distribution since organic feed might wanna clogg your strings)

DQ: Thanks! I will remember to not put the clay bottom next time. Hope I will be able to buy tensio meters too (and/or Blumat watering system).

 

Just to be sure we are on the same page - watering 1.5L from under means that I pour 1.5L to the DR60 floor so that all 4 pots drink from it (not per plant). I gave them total 0.5L from under last time. Maybe that's good amount if given once a week?

 

The two plants that were smaller in the beginning too drink almost half less water than the other two bigger plants. The amount of water needed per one of the biggest plants gets written down to the info table.

I,d Say, about up to 100 ml water from under every day, but works better with trays as on "open floor".

 

Better water daily little bits as opposed to lots of it once a week.

 

From above you only water then when the upper layer where you poke your finger begins to dry out to a level where it becomes hard to sense moist anylonger. (D' be at 300 mb so about, this high up)

 

I would not want to feed more often as just ones every 5 days and stick to your present dosage.

 

Buds and plants are not that big that they could handle it differently.

Good clear up with things that I wasn't so sure of. Been doing the finger testing for moisture as you described. Good to hear that the nute schedule is about right.

 

At flowering week 5 I gave them BAC Bloom (1ml/0.5L per plant) two times instead of one (though I didn't feed them on week 4). Some days later the plants started to have brown hairs. Might have happened earlier too, not 100% sure. I also stopped balancing the water pH at the end of week 5. Can there be correlation between these things? Are the brown hairs normal in this early stage?

Brown hairs are not normal in that stage. My bet is they had too much water at times.(eg. too less oxigine wich makes the plant prioritise only giving some calyxes the chance to ripen up.)

I used to keep water in 10L bucket for at least 24 hours before watering the plants to have more oxygen in it. Maybe this pump will make the job better. Tell me if I got the wrong thing.

I'm interested in LED's myself so I'd have followed your grow even without all the great porn :)

 

I always leave tapwater out 24 hours to allow the chlorine to evaporate, I'm not sure that letting it sit out would increase the amount of disolved oxigen in it, quite the opposite I should think as over time the oxigen would boil out much like the chlorine does and be consumed by aerobic micro-organisms.

 

that link goes to a recirculating carbon filter, it would probably remove most of the chlorine (especialy if you run it for 24 hours :) ) but unless it's a fountain I don't see how it puts oxigen into the water, also, it looks quite costly to maintain, new filters every month? :) an air pump/ airstone combo would both add oxigen and de-chlorinate your water, probably cost a fraction of what that pump does, mine cost just under 10$ for airstone ,airline, and pump, only downside is it's a bit noisy.
