Flowering week 10 (flowering day 70, overall day 101)

 

Should I be doing something at the end stage? What would be good time to stop giving BAC Bloom? And continue giving Bacto normally once a week until the end? Friend has Final Solution, could get that if it's recommended.

well the proof is in the pudding about the LED's. Can you explain the difference between youre LED's and HID's youve used and how they compare? And im sure you posted this but i dont have time to read the whole thread can you give some tips for someone thinking about LED's where a good place to find them and what to look for?

ryno: the thing is that these led grows are my first ever, so I don't have experience growing with HID. I'm lucky to have people guiding me here. What comes to choosing the right LED panel you need know what type of grow you are going to do and then select the right options for the panel. As far as I know these are the things you should know:

- Wavelengths and ratio how many red:blue:other

- Light angle (in degrees) of the led lenses

- LED type/manufacturer (don't know much about this)

Also you might need to prepare to modify the led panel's cooling fans quiet.

 

I'm quite a novice about leds too but there are some led wizards on this forum. Just don't remember the nicks right now :rolleyes: Feel free to discuss about led panels here too.

@LED thanks for the reply i figured on settling on HID's but if i can take heat and 40$ light or more off my power bill that would be enough to make me change my mind LEds also seem safer and id much prefer them its just finding the right one outta all the outrageous claims out there. Thats where i get intimidated by the claims and cost.

so... If the setup is small, LEDs is a good way to go, but with more than a sq meter the cost will be outrageous

 

Leds efficiency:

 

A good LED lamp is made with efficient leds. The spectrum is not so important if the leds are efficient.

 

Generally, Luxeon, Cree, Osram, Epistar, Bridgelux are good brands, the LEDS are efficient (they emit a lot of light for a small power consumption). The best ones actually on the market are Luxeon Rebel and Cree XP, OSRAM dragon and Oslon.

 

But the price of the lamp increase when these brands ar used. An efficient led chip is not cheap, never.

 

Spectrum:

 

For veg, a mix of blue and red is enough, 2 blues + 3 reds is a good ratio. A veg lamp with a little white leds is a little better but not necessary.

 

For blooming, Red is very important, the ganja plant needs a lot of red + deep red and far red to flower nicely.

Green, yellow and orange are less efficient, but they are usefull for plant physiology during blooming.

But actually, nobody knows exactly the right spectrum for cannabis blooming. They are some different schools.

But this is a fact that red is the most important wavelength for flowering.

 

Blue is less needed during the flowering phase but is necessary for photosynthesis, and THC and thrichomes production too.

 

UV boosts the THC content, but is not necessary, blue makes the same effect on THC.

 

Lenses:

Lenses are making the light more intense, they are usefull. The narrower the lens angle, the smaller the footprint and coverage area, but the higher the light intensity on plants. The narrower the lenses angle, the higher the penetration.

The wider the lens angle, the wider the coverage area.

Some leds lamps have 60° lenses, this is the narrower angle found actually on led lamps.

Others have 120° lenses, so 90° is the middle, and a good, medium, angle.

 

Fans:

A LED must be cooled to work with a good efficiency, and to have a good lifetime (50000-60000H).

Many manufacturers are using fans. They are noisy and they increase the power consumption of the lamp, but they are necessary, according to the lamp design. This design is called active cooling.

 

Some lamps have no fans and are using passive cooling, like the spanish lamps EVO V3. So no noise, perfect for stealth grows.

 

Footprint:

This is very important to know the recommanded coverage area of one led module. Almost all manufacturers are exaggerating this area. Actually, 350W/m², with efficient leds, is a good value for flowering. 120W/m² is enough for veg with a good designed veg lamps and leds distributed along the grow area, passively cooled.

 

And this is important too to know the good distance between lamp and plant tops. The higher the lamp, the smaller the penetration. If plants are too close, the light will make apical chlorosis on apexs.

 

1W and 3W leds:

An 1W LED is more efficient than a 3W led. But we need more to do the same job so the cost of the lamp will increase. 3W leds are cheapest but a little less efficient, but penetration is better, and footprint is smaller.

1W leds can be overpowered to 2W or even 3W for some white or blue leds, but efficiency will decrease dramatically.

 

LED bin:

LEDs are still being developed and improved at a rapid rate so it is hard for a factory to produce 100% cutting edge LEDs. Essentially the factory will mass produce LEDs and then test them to see how bright each LED is, the leds are graded and the brighter ones are sold for more as a better grade or Bin.

If the bin is lower, the efficiency is lower, the led is cheapest.

So if a manufacturer use high bins, the lamp is much better, but price increase.

 

Actually, this is better to choose the LED lamp before the tent, this way it is possible to adapt the tent size to the lamp.

A square lamp is better in a square tent.

 

I hope this will help. I wont talk about LED lamps manufacturers, they are many threads and grow diaries with leds on the web forums.

I don't want to make spam ore something like that.

Flowering week 11 (flowering day 77, overall day 108)

 

When to chop?

 

Maybe half of the buds on the screen still have all leaves green. But those are further from light and/or smaller buds.

 

Under the net there isn't too much leaves dying yet. I can't even find any when I try, but I can spot a few on the pics.

 

They also started to drink more, but that's just last 2 days observation and could be wrong.

 

The smell is so nice.

:/ maybe im just noob, but would that really be a true indicator?

 

Take a close up shot of some trichs and if they are like 70% cloudy then thats a good time with some clear and amber ones too.

 

To my knowledge the later you leave it the more trichs turn amber, which would give you a more Heavy High, and when they are clear it will give you more of a buzz....

And cloudy is perfect...

 

And as i have gathered people have different tastes some like to let them go on for longer while some people take a slightly early harvest... If you are doing it commercially i would leave it as long as possible. Otherwise its all up to you, but from the pics it looks like their pretty read maybe a week for some and possibly two for one or two.

 

But all i know is your going to have some CRAZY DOPE!!! enjoy :rolleyes:

Alright. I should be getting a microscope soon so I can check the trichs. Doesn't really matter what type of high it will be, because I can trade it to other weed if I don't like it.

 

Will there be a reasonably bigger difference in yield if I leave them for one or two more weeks?

Those buds that are now shaping your upper canopy are not gonna grow bigger anylonger, but the immature buds downbelow them most certainly will.

 

You could opt for cutting out the buds that are situated in the upper layer of your canopy.

 

Cut em all out at an even level I'd say, to allow the light to shine on your lower buddies.

 

That way I am with weedstiti who says that you could get some 5 % more outa it, but count with an extended flowering time of at least 3 weeks to actually get this 5% done.

 

@ Weedstiti, yes they would have grown still a bit, if it weren't for the condition of the roots that have been too wet and caused the upper buds to stunt.

 

Some individual white pistills in the upper buds would still allow their calyxes to mature, adding maybe up to not even one promile of it's total weight.

 

The plants however are in no shape to be able to pull off some foxtailing. (I reckon that was the thing you expected them to do, but for that they need to be in tip-top shape first.)

 

Under more healthy conditions they sure would have went a long way still.

Flowering week 12 and harvest! (flowering day 84, overall day 115)

 

Scissors said clip clip. Wet and trimmed the weight was 788g, so it will be probably 190-200g dry. It's good for second time ever, but I think with proper watering the buds could be bigger.

In your previous updates there are some buds that concern me, dried curled leafs. Did you check all buds for mold?

You can see the dead leaf under the left bud, I really hope it's not mold.

 

Anyway, I've been following this one quietly, led's :bier hope you can reach the 200 grams!

Dry weight will be verry close to 200 gr indeed, but just and just not.

 

Tho with all experience you have now... and assuming you would have the same setup and ingredients next time too... I will be anticipating your next harvest to be somewhere between 250 and 300 gram.

 

For Fucking sure man :bier ;) !

 

 

Ps. If you want to make it yourselves real easy next time> shop for some prime grade earth worm castings and add some 30 to 40 % of it to the total mix.

 

I am sure shackzilla can handle it.
