Greetings Open Growers. It’s autumn. The leaves are turning, the deer are in season, and my attic has cooled down enough so that I can fire up that 1000W bulb up there in the green room.

As is typical, I was torn between a zillion strains I’ve never grown or smoked before, so I narrowed it down to four. I was going to try Chocolate Rain, Lollypop, Ace of Spades, and Santa Maria x Cheeseberry – five of each (Oh, I’m going to keep them small! It’s all according to plan!). About half would be males, so I’d end up with about 10 fabulous girls. What could possibly go wrong with that number of plants under a single bulb? Last year a single Lemonberry took up half the real estate in the green room, but that’s because I failed to keep her small! How remiss I was in my youth.

Anyway, the day I started to soak my seeds, I had all my seeds out in front of me. Wouldn’t it be interesting to sample Cheeseberry along WITH Santa Maria x Cheeseberry? Damn right it would! So a couple of AoS got dropped from the running for a couple of CB seeds.

But HEY! I have yet to try one of Professor P’s offerings. Maybe I can slip a couple of those KF x Space Queen freebies in there and drop another AoS and a SM x CB.

OK, that’s how it was.

Unlike last year, when half my seedlings suffered sudden infant death syndrome, only two seedlings croaked: a SM x CB seemed to push itself out of a spongepot, and my clumsy attempt to get it back in there killed it. Also, a Lollypop decided to die for no reason at all. That’s right, NO REASON. I think it was depressed.

I was down to a mere 18 plants, meaning I’d only have a sparse 9 girls under the HID if I got 50% females. So naturally I sprouted a Mad Scientist fem. I felt bad about the way I tortured and killed that other Mad Scientist plant out in my yard this summer, so I’m making it up to the strain. I’m making it up by putting it in an overcrowded grow room with a few weeks less vegging than all the other plants. It will forever be in my debt.

This was all at the end of August. Fast forward to a few weeks under some t-5 bulbs in the nursery tent, and a bunch of the boys have shown preflowers. I don’t keep males, so I now have:

2 chocolate rain (1 with female preflowers, 1 without)

1 SM x CB with female preflowers

2 Ace of Spades, no preflowers

2 Lollypop, no preflowers

1 Mad. Sci. fem.

I’m still in denial about the two CBs, one of the CRs and a Lollypop. They have primordial preflowers that LOOK like males BUT there’s still a snowball's chance in hell that I’m wrong.

Looks like trying out one of Professor P’s crosses will have to wait, and likely the same for the CB. But that means the other 3 seeds in that freebie pack are girls, by law of averages! It’s a law, the seeds can’t break it! And by that same law, the rest of my plants are girls, right? RIGHT? I knew you'd agree.

OK then. I didn’t want to bore the shit out of you with pictures of newly sprouted seedlings, so I didn’t take any. I’m a little torn about whether I should show boring pics of 4 week old vegging plants, but I’ll post them as a service to those of you with insomnia, after I make the final transplant this weekend. In the mean time, I'll describe them:

1. Green

2. Look like weed

3. Plants I messed up the FIM on look like Palmetto trees on top

4. Ace of Spades is short.

5. CR and SM x CB are tall.

There you have it.

Were You smoking killingfields while mulling over that selection?

I will be watching with intrest Mr.Dirt.

This could be the most succinct grow report ever recorded. (*unfolding lawn chair for a front row seat*) Next time use a Magic 8 ball to decide your strains. It is more scientific than your method.

Haha, I love it. The title says it all, lol. I know just how you feel. I will never be able to grow out all the seeds I have bought over the years, let alone all the different seeds I keep making.

Looks like you have a nice selection to play with this winter. The weather around my parts is just getting cool enough to fire up the indoor lights. Finally!!!

On with the show....

No, but I was smoking Killing Fields when I wrote that. I guess you could say I was really missing a crazy-headed sativa in my life.

I think it would be fun to have a coffee and reefers with you. Keep 'er green, Dirt, no matter what it is. :)

Thanks for all the well wishing.

Here's a quick peek at the gals (hopefully) just after their FIRST 12 hour dark cycle. Do they look ready yet to you? I'm thinking another week or ten.

In the front row, left to right, we have a cheeseberry, which is the one I thought was a male, but now I'm not so sure; then we have a Lollypop (Leprechaun Seeds, this is a C99 x Romulan cross); then a chocolate rain (this one has female preflowers.

Second row, l to r: Ace of Spades (TGA Seeds), Santa Maria x Cheeseberry, Chocolate Rain

Third Row, l to r: Hidden back in the corner where you can't see it, is a Mad Scientist fem, in the middle is another Ace of Spades, and behind that CR is another Lollypop.

gallery_3138_3390_211469.jpg

Below are the two Chocolate Rains. The one with preflowers is nicknamed The Claw, for obvious reasons. She's never been over watered or over fertilized, she just has hooked leaves. I can tell I better get a La Vie-style mini-SCROG screen up over these two within the next few days, or things could get out of hand.

gallery_3138_3390_233359.jpg

Oh, and for what it's worth:

They're in 12 liter pots, and I don't intend to transplant them again, unless maybe all without preflowers turn out to be male (doubtful) and I want to maximize what I have left. The medium is a 3:1 mix of a potting soil called Dr. Earth's Pot O' Gold and perlite, with about 50 ml (3 tbsp) of finely ground dolomite +15 ml of Dr. Earth's Bud and Bloom Booster (4-10-7) per 4 liters of soil mix. The pH of the drainage water is coming out 6.4-6.7, so I'm a happy camper there.

The Bud and Bloom Booster is a new product to me. I added it at less than half the recommended rate for container plants, so I don't expect problems.

When the plants become more visibly interesting, like when it becomes clear that I've failed to keep the plants small, or incredibly gorgeous goo-covered buds appear, I'll post more pics.

I took some pics last night, and now my camera won't give them up. I think the little SD card is fucked. I'll give it another try with a new card tonight, when the lights go back on.

The Cheeseberry that I wouldn't give up on produced some undeniable balls, along with another of the Lollypop plants. I'm down to 7 plants, all definite girls, though.

The two Chocolate rains are getting the SCROG treatment, and are the first plants I've grown that way. I'm using the patented LaVie Mini-SCROG method, and it just might work out for them. They are the most stretchy plants I've got, and in order the keep the plants at relatively uniform heights, it is necessary.

The Santa Maria x CB is next in the degree of stretch, and I might start her on a SCROG, too. She's starting to get taller than the screens on the CR plants. She is somewhat open, so the inner buds will get some light, so I could end up being lazy and let her grow with just the FIM she got.

Both of the Ace of Spades plants are doing fine, and are quite vigorous. One was taller than the other, and she got topped. The other will just grow naturally. These are typical short, squat indicas with substantial stems, and look like they will be heavier producers that the average TGA strain.

The single Lollypop girl is doing well. She's about mid-height between the SM x CB and the AoS.

The Mad Scientist fem is a lot different than the MSc that I tortured and killed in the yard this summer. That one pretty much equalled the young Killing Fields for the first six weeks or so, in growth and height (before I transplanted her into the shitty spot that eventually killed her). This one is a very short, squat indica, with internodes about 2 cm in length. I've never grown White Widow, so I'm assuming this girl is taking after the WW parent. I'm looking forward to a devastating stupor of a high with this girl.

I'll post some pics tonight or tomorrow. You will then see my lame attempt at a SCROG, which actually might work out. There is obviously a little more thought required for a SCROG than an LST grow. Things like making sure you plant the plant in the fucking MIDDLE of the pot is a help, and actually visualizing where each branch will be trained is key. Ultimately, I may not have a large enough screen for these two, depending on when they decide to stop stretching. The least amount of stretch is in the MSc, which has almost no stretch. The AoS and Lollypop have doubled in height so far, the CR might have tripled so far, but it's hard to tell with the screen.

None have been nute burned, none are suffering from deficiencies. It's been wonderfully uneventful in that way. A good grow, so far, and I seem to be keeping them small! or small enough.

A few crappy pics under the HPS:

This is all seven girls again. The two with the LaVie Mini-SCROG screens are Chocolate Rains.

gallery_3138_3390_218194.jpg

Here is the CR I call The Claw. It is somewhat less vigorous than the other. Being my first SCROG attempt, I'm not sure if I'll have too much plant for the screen, or have bare patches in it when the stretch is done.

gallery_3138_3390_331093.jpg

This is the other, more vigorous CR. It also claws its leaves a bit, but not nearly as much.

gallery_3138_3390_375889.jpg

This is the Lollypop girl, who looks like the typical hybrid, at this point. She was topped once. There was an attempted FIM session on all but the Mad Scientist and one of the Ace of Spades. I still haven't gotten my FIMing skills down, so this one ended up topped.

gallery_3138_3390_296545.jpg

This is the Ace of Spades girl that was topped. With the topping, she's now about the same height as the untopped one. So far, the only difference between the two phenos is height.

gallery_3138_3390_67792.jpg

Untopped Ace of Spades:

gallery_3138_3390_46447.jpg

This is the Santa Maria x Cheeseberry, which was stretching a lot less than the CR, but now that the two CRs are on screens, she's getting taller than they are. I'm wondering if she's done stretching yet, or if I should get a screen on her.

gallery_3138_3390_231428.jpg

Last, and at this point least, is the Mad Scientist fem. She seems very healthy and quite happy. She finally put out a few preflowers 4 days ago.

gallery_3138_3390_2580.jpg

In contrast to this Mad Scientist pheno, the plant on the right, below, was the Mad Scientist fem that I murdered outside this past summer, but this was when she was still vegging, and before she went downhill. The plant on the left is a Killing Fields, so it's pretty clear that there are at least two phenos in Mad Scientist -- one that is similar in growth habit to a large sativa dom. Too bad I won't be able to compare the final product of each.

gallery_3138_2778_360137.jpg

I'll post more pics again when buds begin getting droolworthy, or some disaster occurs and I'm begging for advice. All in all, things are going well. I see a slight hint of nute burn on some leaf tips, but it's not enough to show up on these crappy photos.

Looks great so far dirt

I don't think you will fill the screen with the claw

I usually try to bend main stems below the screen so that shoots start popping up all over

Looking forward to early Flo pics!

Yeah, I don't expect The Claw to be a big producer. The other CR has shoots popping out of side branches all over the place, but The Claw seems to have more dominant tops, and the newly exposed growing points just aren't springing to life, as expected.

I think I'll do a little LST on the SM x CB, and let that baby become a monsterous shrub. I figured it had a bit of the giant-ass sativa in it, but it was just slower coming out of the gate than CR.

Good luck on your indoor grow Misterdirt. I really enjoyed your outdoor grow this last summer. I used the Dr Earth fertilizer exclusively this year on my outdoor grow and I'm very pleased with it. Hope it works for ya, I'll be watching.

Thought I'd post a brief update, and then the batteries in my camera decided it would be even briefer. Lucky you! Hopefully I'll scrounge up a few AA's before the lights go on tonight.

Anyway, I DID get a pic of one of the Ace of Spades girls. This one was topped once, the other was not. Of all the girls, the A of S has the most developed buds.

gallery_3138_3390_75966.jpg

This is the only pic I got, so as a bonus, I offer you this little inset of a bud. I know, I know, it's almost as exciting as getting freebie seeds from Sannie's Shop to get this:

gallery_3138_3390_9657.jpg

So calm down, and try to maintain a little dignity. This is a public forum here.

As with the other TGA strain I've ran (Vortex), this one is developing a lot of trichs early. The buds are also much more massive than any of the others, so far. The scent, at this point, is very skunky with some fruity sweetness coming through. It grows like a "typical" medium sized indica dom.

The two CR girls are on LaVie-style mini-SCROG screens. One appears to be the pheno that E$ko considers his favorite. It's got narrower leaflets, is a little frostier, and is a more robust plant that seems like it will produce more than The Claw. She has the chocolate + fruit scent, when rubbed. The Claw has a more fruity, less chocolate scent right now.

The Lollypop girl is developing well, but is a relatively small plant. She has a candy-like scent, with a strong undertone of skunk.

The Santa Maria x Cheeseberry is looking good, and should be on a SCROG screen, but she'll also do fine in the patented uncontrolled bush method that I'm using on her. If I had vegged her another week, she'd have taken over half the grow room. Her trichs and buds are somewhat less developed than other plants, but when rubbed she's got a light fruity scent with some skunk -- similar to the Lollypop.

The Mad Scientist is coming along well, but her buds are least developed. She did not start flowering until at least a week after the others, since she was short changed on veg time.

Based on bud development so far, it looks like the Ace of Spades or the Lollypop will finish first, followed by the CR girls, and then the SM x CB. Regardless, it will be at least another 4 weeks before any of them are ready. The Mad Scientist might keep going until Christmas.

I took some MORE crappy pictures, just to document this grow. But I have also decided that before this grow is done, a new camera will be taking the pics. With a new camera, I might even take the trouble to put the plants in the proper light first, and get close enough to SEE, not just imagine, trichomes.

But meanwhile...

This is the other Ace of Spades. At this point she's definitely a different pheno than the topped one in the post above. She was shorter, and the buds are smaller, at this point. You can see there was a supercropping attempt, but she straightened herself out (kinda).

gallery_3138_3390_441004.jpg

This is one of the chocolate rains. This one seems more sativa-like than The Claw. BTW, this image is properly rotated on my computer, but comes out sideways here.

gallery_3138_3390_411924.jpg

And speaking of The Claw, here she is. She is filling out nicely. Buds are somewhat chunkier than on the other CR.

gallery_3138_3390_464854.jpg

This is the little Lollypop gal. The buds are quite pretty in real life, trust me.

gallery_3138_3390_9171.jpg

Another angle:

gallery_3138_3390_251861.jpg

This is the Santa Maria x Cheeseberry. Her leaves are clawing a bit, too, so I wonder if maybe that Bud n' Bloom Booster is a touch too heavy on the P.

gallery_3138_3390_440074.jpg

Last and least is the Mad Scientist. Still no trichomes visible to the naked eye, or even 5x. But she's really only been flowering about 3 weeks.

gallery_3138_3390_147167.jpg

Enough red n' yellow washed pictures for tonight. Next time... maybe half decent pics.

Looking real good MisterDirt, great variety going on. Highs and tastes that'll hit you from a shit load of angles lol.

That Lollipop, Rom heavy pheno ....very desirable, very nice looking lady. I had all Cindy leaning, and would have given a left nut for at least one to have more Rom in it. You get a clone or 10?

All the best dude, you're on autopilot.

Cheers,

RM

Sadhu: I hope to improve the photography style in time for this grow's bud porn season. Of course, I'll only be upgrading the equipment, not the skill.

Rev: I'm looking forward to that girl's development. If she smokes as well as she's starting to look (I can't wait to have the ability to do some macro close-ups -- definitely different looking buds and calyxes than I'm used to seeing) I may have to run the rest of the pack I've got in one grow to investigate as many phenos as possible. EASY plant to grow -- almost care free. I had the bad luck of 4 of the 5 sprouts turning out to be males. Hopefully the rest will make up for that ratio.

Tragically, I almost forgot to include this one last crappy pic -- the group shot of the gals under the light. I actually was able to keep them small (enough) so that there is a minimum of hair pulling, face scratching fights for light in there. In fact, I could have actually handled another plant or two. I may dial into this makeshift grow room, yet!

It's rare for me to have such a well trained canopy. Hopefully it will result in a decent yield.

canopy perfection right there dude. I've struggled the past two grows with my AK just going ape-shit on me so I appreciate you joy for having such a nice damn nug carpet going on lol.

Back to the Lollipop...I'd dry hump that lady every time I opened my grow room door lol. She's a beaut, as they all are.

Cheers,

RM

Yeah, I saw your thread in Esko's forum. That SM x BB sounds great.

I saw you've also got Shackzilla. I'm going to grow some of that after these girls are done. I tried some a few weeks ago, and it absolutely kicks ass. I'll be scrogging those girls for certain.

Santero: It should get a lot better. So far, no great calamities, aside from possibly excess P in the fertilizer I used. When they get closer to maturity, it will be a love fest.

Scents of week 5:

As expected, the Esko creations have wonderfully dank scents already. The two CRs have differing levels of "fruity" vs. chocolate. The SM x CB lady is deeply fruity/skunky.

The Lollypop girl smells like a red lollypop that got sprayed by a skunk. I'm falling in love.

Mad Scientist is just starting to put out trichs. Not much scent yet.

The Ace of Spades is kind of a disappointment in the scent department. Even after rubbing trichomes, they have almost no scent at all. Great stealth plant if you're not using anything to cut the scent, but I hope this situation improves. Since the only other TGA strain I've grown was Vortex, the lack of scent comes as a shock. It's frosty enough, but both phenos are the same in this regard. They seemed to have more scent a week and a half ago. Hope this improves, or that after a cure an interesting scent comes out.
