Well since nobody had any comments yet i thought i would share a bit how is my little project coming along.

I went with the cubes to try out since i thougt that the flakes in upper pic would compact too much.i also got some PU foam but dont know if should use it or not?

Hi Mink,

The second picture in your first post looks just like the last production run of Growpito brand mapito (a US firm apparently out of business).

The Growpito 3/4 inch cubes are reticulated polyurethane (I believe), produced by the second process described here:

http://fxi.com/foam-...eticulation.php (judging by the sooty black sand residue found in the bottom of media soaking tubs).

By volume, I'd guess the Growpito ratio of foam to rockwool as being 1:10.

The foam must be reticulated polyester urethane and looks like 10ppi: https://www.ufpt.com...thane-foam.html

I've thought about making mapito. In the US, Grodan Grow Chunks look like the best place to start. Rockwool can be made with different absorbancies.

Hey guys thanks for stoping,

@saxo yes the cubes are wool but are kinda greenish color and not as firm as are the ones u buy in growshops they are kinda soft.

I have them mixed in my perlite hempy buckets and the roots seem to love it.

Oh the flag hanging in my garage is the flag of a country i was born in a country that was broken up and doesnt exsist any more Yugoslavia....what a shame

This is the site where more information can be read and both companys are european.

Thanks for the info will look into it.

there are lot of medium called "mapito" on the market

i use 1/8 bag grodan granulate, 10 liter soft foam, 10 l polysterin ball for making 27 liter mapito

i water 1/3 from bottom every 3rd day

i found mapito suck up the salts to the top... so when reusing... u have to avoid to wash back everyhing to the whole medium... that s why i flip the crates before flushing from top.

hope it make sense

happy growing

Hidronesia you Rod Stewart impersonator... long time no see ^^

@ Mink

I think the media you are trying to make here is unecessary.

You have Grodan Granulate which when chopped is virtually 95% mapito.

The mini grow cubes are also made like Grodan's version (1/2" cubes) and after using I find superior to Mapito due to the big beautiful air gaps.

Hidronesia's recipe for custom mapito is an excellent one (but he is too chicken to not worry about using the PU foam)... The PE balls offer precise control over drainage when added in ratio to rockwool granulate.

After many months of testing and experimenting I now beleive I have created the perfect "mapito" media, but it will require me to do another grow journal to show everybody :P

Personally i would just use the cubes :)

Rose.

Hi guys,

Thanks for stoping by and sharing knowledge. For now im just going to go with the cubes that i allready bought still dont know what to mix in for the 5% but the eps balls look great and i thik would be good for airand drainage.

@Rose and what would the recipe be for your pito?

@Hidronesia i must say that exactly this kind of pictures of plants and yield plus the advantage of recycling made me wanna try mapito ebb and flood.

Great grow and harvest man!whats the strain?

And what would everybody have to say about this kind of growing from seed?

How could i achieve that kind of growth pattern with 14 day veg and the fact that plants are kind of small to top?

Thank you,green vibes

@Hidronesia

Less plants, longer veg times... somebody has been experimenting too ;)

You are still the 'King of Core' :D

@Mink

There are plenty of threads here from members you can search that will give you the answers you seek for mapito in's and out's... (Hidronesia, TomTom, Simplicity, LEDfoot, Carper, Eskobar just to name a few)

I dont mind sharing prematurely, but in a nutshell my perfect mapito mix I arrived on in the end was:

1x Grodan Granulate 20kg (chopped)

1x PE Balls 100L

1x Canna Coco Coir 50L

I call this "Dirty Pito"

While the granulate + Pballs offer a precise drainage and air/water ratio for the mapito, the inert nature of the rockwool offered little protection against root disease if it reared its head. More benefit was to be had by having a "beneficial" rootzone than a "sterile" rootzone as is commonly used with rockwool growing.

Rockwool will inoculate with beneficial bacteria much better than most people would be lead to beleive, but due to it's non humus (organic) structure it requires more continuous reapplication of beneficial bacteria to be effective.

By adding a "peppering" of coco coir through the granulate, I give myself little houses for the beneficial and fungi to house onto while not really interfering with the CEC or WHC (speed, uptake and reusability) of the mapito while now having the rootzone protection of coco coir.

The speed and power of mapito with the protection of coco coir and the ability to run organics.

I have come to the conclusion that the introduction of mapito manufacturers that were offering 5% coco coir ammendment as opposed to 5% PE flakes may have made a substantial difference in the success of a grow due to the qualities that coco coir offers... whether they did it by accident or not, the scientific merit is there.

I will post some pics for you later :)

Rose.

Hey Rose

Im allready searching thru forum and threads sucking up everything i can about mapito and the method...thanks for naming the growers that use it will make my searches quicker.

Man...coco...??? I had such difficulties last three grows becous of it!

I love it and have been growing in coco for 2 years but the bugs and pests that have been emerging from it last few times made me thinking to switch method.

Last time i even poured near boiling water and covering it over night a still got some fungus larvae survive not to mention thrips and some other bugs that came on coco.

I was opening bags in the hydro store all the labels had bugs (canna, atami, plagron)plagron had the least.

So i dont know about coco but saw KWX-1 online thats supposed to be coco and rockwool.now i have plants in hempys with perlite and those cubes i bought instead of vermiculite.

Looking forward to some pics thanks for sharing.

Sciarid flies love coco probably the most of organic media yes.

#1. If you flood and drain, the top will remain dry which is a deterrent.

#2. Scratch up the top 1" of the mapito the next day after any handwatering. This will seperate the top of the media from wicking moisture (capillary) from the top of the pot by physical disconnection and allow it to go dry so you wont have green algae. Scarid fly love algae too.

#3. Better yet, purchase "Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth Powder" and add a few cups to your media when you make it up. Once the top dries it becomes a bed of razor blades that the Sciarid Fly cannot pass/move around the media without cutting itself to ribbons. Despite internet broscience, it will not influence PH or give magical powers of silica strength to branches, but in merit, may offer mild increase in Ca uptake.. but irrelevant ;)

Hey Rose will try when i get my e&f up and running.i have tryed putting my dry cubes in a pot and dipped it in water 1/3 maybe just a bit more and in a minute the cubes wicked water straight to the top and the uper layer was wet so i dont know maybe these cubes are too absorbant? But will also try the scratching thing you said.

I would like to thank everyone for help and comments!

Im now seriously thinking of switching my entire room on this system.

Looks like wads of granulated rockwool--very nice!

Meanwhile, here in North America, Growpito brand mapito has gone out of business (a short life--the product was overpriced).

I was thinking of buying Grodan Grow-Chunks (3/4 inch) and/or Grow-Cubes (1/4 inch).

http://grodan101.com...out-grow-chunks

http://grodan101.com...oose/grow-cubes

Today I bought 150 liters of loose Grow-Cubes in a box for $77 + tax at a hydro store near Seattle. I was driving by and wondered if they carried this product. Walk in the front door and there is a big stack of these Grodan boxes. People shopping here know what they're doing, for the most part.

gallery_6205_5939_41541.jpg

The "cubes" are about 3/8 x 1/2 inch. Grodan info site says these are equivalent to a half-and-half mix of absorbant and nonabsorbant granulated rockwool. I was trying to find a source for the reticulated foam used in Growpito but gave up. I'll try the grow-cubes by themselves in five gallon totes.

gallery_6205_5939_103564.jpg

Current grow in Growpito; nitrogen claw when I went from 1.43 mS to 1.48 mS, starting with 0.185 mS tap water. Maxibloom dry nute. I cycled today (three day cycles) at 1.38 mS and then will return to 1.43 mS. pH=5.6

What i am using now is recycled big blocks from my last grow that i tore up into particles and mixed with rfx-1. I have tried it with one 11 liter pot when i ran out of rfx-1 and didn't notice any difference.

gallery_19153_5931_236014.jpg

The only difference is the price.

Have a nice one,Mink

I'm using 5 grams per gallon of MaxiBloom with a gram of epsom salts and some fulvic acid (Ful-Power). Starting with 0.18mS tap water, this gives me a total of 1.5mS, adjusted to pH 5.6.

On the topic of DIY mapito, I've ordered a 0.75 inch thick sheet of 10 PPI reticulated foam: https://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=105399
