WWE GROW #1
24 January 2019

One LONG ASS POST for so little of a start...

Today is a fresh start on a grow by a very novice grower near DC- the District of Cannabis. I would be very grateful for any assistance I find here since I tend to overthink things with severe OCD and PTSD. I have a history of being a terrible husbandman to plant life. I am far more successful with animals thank God! Best assume that I know absolutely nothing other than what i have read on Google but did fumble my way through one successful outdoor grow from purchased seed that I intentionally harvested seed from so I could practice- cause I evidently am going to need a lot of it!

Can someone recommend a resource for learning how to have a perpetual grow that I describe below? Otherwise, with OCD I will be forever reading every source I can find trying to determine which is best when all I really want is to be able to trust someone else's opinion if possible.

LOCATION: INDOOR (large DARKENED bonus room over garage)
I have the entire room to use which is good but my tent is small. So I am prepared to go "beyond the tent" if necessary. In fact, I want to eventually have a perpetual grow established, keeping some mothers in the tent to take clones from that I can then plant outdoors. But I also want to be able to do full indoor grows too if needed- like now. I am in the DC area and think all this means that I would take clones and plant them outside no later than July for a harvest in November. When I had my grow that produced the seed I'm growing now, I started them from seed in April and harvested in November or December if I remember correctly...

TENT: Agromax Original Short Stack 39.25"x39.25"x30.50" . I actually love this tent, but it does not fit my 4' T5 Lamp Fixture which sucks. I am making due now by stuffing the fixture into the tent as well as I can so I can close the top with the 1000 watt Lamp hanging above it. I obviously should have gone with the 2' T5 Lamp option as in the picture below... Let this be a lesson fella's... Bigger is not always better if you're a lamp. But in the case of this tent, I sure wish I wouldn't have had to throw my purchases together the way I did in hindsight...

LIGHTING:
IPower 1000 Watt HPS MH Digital Lamp
with adjustable power settings to 50%. I have this Lamp hanging above the tent but

GrowBright 4 Foot 6 Lamp High Output T5 with Grow and Bloom lamps. Now hanging inside my tent and helping to keep the seeds warm.

HEAT EXHAUST for the HPS MH Lamp: Someone had asked me about my setup so here is a closer picture. The exhaust fan at the top of this image is pulling the heated air from the lamp from the cold air supply vent tube at the bottom. I have not tested this particular setup yet, but it should do fine. I initially had the 1000 watt HPS rigged up INSIDE THE TENT in this fashion and it ran at 81F without the need for the fan as long as the tent was open. If I buttoned the tent up though, the fan would run continuously and the temp was steady at 91F. So in this current setup, where the Lamp is now hanging from the ceiling, I do not think it will add much heat at all to the room itself or the tent- should I need to open the top of the tent and change out the T5 Lamps with the HPS or MH. Good plan?

IRRIGATION SYSTEM:
Autopot 4-Pot System
with 12.4 gallon resevoir and 3.9 gallon pots. I have never used this system and hope it saves me some frustration. I will need to learn how to incorporate this system into my overall grow plan. Which, at the moment, seems to be that I now have the ability to maintain 4 mothers in my tent with the potential to expand if necessary :-)

GROW MEDIUM:
SEED STARTER: BURBEE XL 16-cell Seed starter kit [8 seeds from each strain germing now on a heat pad!]

VEG GROWTH: CocoTek will be used with the AutoPot System

My SOIL MIX:
This soil recipe was posted in a thread here some years ago. All I know about "the Dude" who posted it is that he was eager to share his knowledge with others and was always posting pictures of some absolutely beautiful grows with the sweetest looking plants. I made a batch of this 2-3 years ago and saved what I didn't use of it in a garbage can in my barn ever since. Don't know if it's good to use, needs amending of some kind, or what. Thought I would mix it with the CocoTEK above for this grow? What do you think? It had some good stuff in it I am told. And that guy grew some magical weed from it.

3 cu/ft (21 gallons) potting soil mix (Promix) Epsom Organic Mix, 1 cu/ft (7 gallons) Aeration (Perlite/Rice Hulls), 1-1.5 cu/ft Organic Compost (Hummus Source), 6-8 cups Rock Dust (Glacial Rock, Basalt, Granite), 30lb Earthworm Castings, 3-4 cups per cu/ft nutrient mix (Alfalfa, Organic Fish, Bone, Kelp, Neem Seed and Crustacean Meal.

NOTE: the image below doesn't reveal much but it is REALLY DRY after sitting all that time and it seems that no matter how much water I give it soon dries out to this state again. The soil below has not had any water in a VERY LONG TIME. But in my rush to get a grow started, I tried to use some of it to START MY SEEDS with and believe that a combination of this soil being "hot" and/or the fact that it dries out so quick and is difficult to determine for me when to water, I killed all 16 of the last attempt.

I would WELCOME suggestions on ways to incorporate this soil into my grow if possible. However, if I should ditch it into my garden outside instead, I'm happy to do that too! I also have a continual supply of horse manure that I compost with bedding, etc.

Current View as of 24 January 2019:
Not much to see... Please help me to make it look more better! Thank you from a veteran in need.

If you have a large room, I'd section off several grow areas with panda film or mylar ( fairly inexpensive). Several tents, over 60" would work also...$$. That size tent above will only really good for seeding and veg. 1000w lamp will cook everything in it. I'd suggest t5 or several low wattage led.

My grow room is in a 12'x12' room. I used mylar to section off an 6x8 area for growing under 1000w. Even in that size, the light will push the temps over 100F without an a/c or swamp cooler (I use both depending on temp & humidity) during warmer months. Even winter temps under 40 my room reaches 75-80.

Go to growweedeasy.com. you will find all the info you need to get you started properly.  OCD is good when you are researching,  the more you read the more you know.  Dont think you need all the expensive gear. Improve YOUR environment with what YOU need. Gear can get expensive and you dont want to buy what you dont need.

Do it on the cheap until your knowledge grows. Good luck

Hi @Zrex I use the same stacker

I’ve got the little one for seedlings and clones and the larger one for veg and flowering

The only issues I have with it is it’s only 3 years old and is already showing signs of ware ( can see light coming through in some spots )

Soil is way to hot for seedlings get some starter soil

If your soil had dried out wile in storage it my not be any good

when I mix soil I get like a mad scientist I need to control myself

I fine out less is better

now I use happy frog and add a few things

in 3 cu ft I add 1 cup of bone meal and  1 cup blood meal 1/2cup epson salts 1  cup bat guano 1/2 cup of azomite and mycorrhizae fungi ( the roots love it )1 will mix a gallon of water ( no chlorine it will kill thegood stuff in the soil ) add 1 tablespoon of humic acid and mix in the soil with extra perlite

ill post more later at work

welcome aboard

Thanks very much. @Justcozz I'm not using the 1000w lamp, but have it ready to go when I do. I'm just using the 4' T5's that are stuffed into the top of my tent as best I could fit it. If I need more light later, I can just fold back the top of the tent, remove the T5's and turn on the bigger lamp. But I will eventually get another larger tent to have something similar to your setup.

Just so I'm clear about your thoughts on the temps, my room has AC from the house and also an oscillating fan that runs 24/7. There is a window in the room, but I boarded it up to block the light and use it for the cooling supply and exhaust for the lamp. If you think I'll still have heat issues, I better start looking into solutions now... I will give the resource you provided a look.

And @Papalag that is sad news about my soil but glad I asked about it.

I'm just kidding, but I try to avoid anything that reminds me of Norfolk, Virginia

29 January:

Day 2 since first sprouts appeared and still waiting for the Jackberry to catch up... This is a curious thing for me. The seeds I have came from seeds purchased from Sanni two or three years ago that I planted outdoors in my garden (my first and only successful grow so far). I purposely let females from both strains be pollinated from males from both because I really didn't think about it and just wanted to see if I could get through a grow for once and get some seed i could practice with. I kept the seeds separated from each other and I am calling them by their original strains here: Jackberry and Herebei although I guess the genetics are a cross either way, but there is an very obvious difference here...

I planted 8 seeds of each into the Burpee XL seed starter on the same day and placed them into my tent under the T5's. Every single one of the "Herebei" with the exception of 1- sprouted on the same day, while only 2 of the Jackberry appeared that day. The next day (today, day 3), only 1 more of the Jackberry has appeared. In the picture below, the Jackberry are on the left / Herebei on the right. Anyone know what's going on here?

I would also like to introduce you to a new strain I am calling "Charlie Brown" after his sad and lonely Christmas Tree. Prior to this effort, I had try the same grow using a super soil mix that I had made (that I grew their parents in actually). But being the newbie I am and not thinking, I tried to start them from seed in that soil and I have NEVER been able to figure out these fiber pots as I can't tell if they are being under-watered or over-watered. So now I use AutoPots and these Burpee starters and things are going much easier... But getting back to Charlie Brown, while all of Charlie's siblings either cooked, dried up, or drowned- this little one REFUSES to give up! So, I'm going to see what it can do :-)

Apart from the uneven growth with the Jackberry that was my doing, they seem to be happy and healthy. I marked them with a piece of tape to track their growth so I can determine the best ones to select.

BTW, I am really impressed by the fact that these seeds are now at least 3 years old. Only 1 of 8 Herebei failed to sprout; The Jackberry don't seem to be as strong, but high success with those too. What's even more impressive is that I didn't examine any of my seeds before saving them. That alone could explain my losses... Thanks Sanni.

Week 1 of Veg Growth:

7 Feb:
Temp range in tent: 76.6F - 77.0F
Relative Humidity: 30%
PH: 6.79
PPM: 024

Transplant Day

Armed with a bunch of 1 gallon grow bags, I think it's time to transplant some of these seedlings. The Herebei have been rooting for 2 weeks now and veg growth is clearly underway now...

I have a coco/perlite mix ready to put into the grow bags. But before i do, my plan is to mix in one last gallon of water to it with all of the GH nutrients recommended at this stage of growth so I don't have to feed them this week except for water they may need until next feeding. They will have to stay in these 1 gallon pots being hand fed until I can sex them and get the ladies into the AutoPots.

My environment seems to be perfect with the exception of relative humidity. I can't seem to get it high enough. I added a humidified to the grow tent last night and this morning it had only reached 33%. Will keep an eye on it closely today and tonight; make changes as necessary. Last night I tried to b.utton the tent up and ran an air exhaust to vent the heat from the T5's with the humidifier in the tent. Temp shot up to 86 quicky before I got the fan's temp control setup to kick on over 77F. Now I'm just running with the tent open and stable at 77.

At some point soon, I'll need to transition these off the T5's to HPS which I plan to do at 50% power with my 1000w lamp.

7 Feb:

Transplanted 4 of the Herebei that are now sitting under HPS at 500w 2' above them.

Temp in the room before lights came on was 67F. After 4 hours with all lights on, temp was 74.5F near the floor where plants under HPS are sitting and 77F in the tent where Relative Humidity was 30%. However, the temp reading outside the tent- where the unit is sitting on top of the tent- the temp reading was 86.5F! I think it is because of where it is sitting though because the room is not that hot...

Transplanted 4 Jackberry's and 1 more of the Herebei to fill out the box with 9. The rest I'll cull, but it's a shame... Wish I could donate them!

Week 2 of Veg Growth:

16 Feb:
Temp range in tent: 76.6F - 77.0F
Relative Humidity: 35%
PH: 6.79
PPM: 024

Still struggling to get RH up to 40% or more. I had read a higher RH increases the chance of females, but my room is too big. But I plan to install a whole house humidifier. Actually have one that burned up and just need to replace it... That should work much better. Until then, I am running two room humidifier at maximum and highest it has reached was 38%.

Everything else is running smoothly. Even my culls are still hanging on and tomorrow i'm planting them outside surrounded by a ton of mulch. Doubt any will survive, but why not let them try? Seeds are too damn expensive for me to watch them be wasted...

I fim'd all but three or four and it didn't seem to slow any of them down much- it at all. Noticeable growth every day!

The strongest of the Herebei I believe is beginning to show signs of being a female. Just seeing hints, but I should know this coming week on some of these so I can get some into the Autopots. Once there, I still have to feed them by hand for 10 days before I can start them up.

Next feeding in three days!

23 February Update: Week 3 of VEG

Temp: 76.4F
RH: 40%
PH: 6.16
PPM: 330
Lamp: 1000w IPower digital at 50% power and HPS lamp.
Medium: Coco/Perlite

Week 3 of Veg ends next week (27 Feb). My plan is NOT to flower these but to take mothers that I will keep in this tent to veg and take clones from later. I plan to move the tent from where it is in the image below to the right side of the desk- where it will become my mother and clone tent; I will put a larger tent (55x55x79) where this one is now to put clones to finish them out when I cannot do so outdoors.

VENTILATION:
I was not happy with my ventilation setup through the window, so decided to vent heat from the lamp into the space above my ceiling (to small to call an attic). However, I am VERY HAPPY with the environment and being able to keep the temp down below 77F consistently with only a rare need for the exhaust fan to kick on set at 77F. PH and PPM (in my water bucket after mixing in my nutes) is good; the only thing I don't like is that my relative humidity (RH) has been low. Even with 2 humidifier's running on high in the room, I can't get it above 40% it seems. Without them though, RH would drop below 30%. Should I bite the bullet and replace the whole house humidifier that hasn't worked since we bought the place?

 PLANTS:
Still waiting to sex them... I'm very impatient and checking them two or three times a day now. Seeing a lot of stretch on H2 (front middle) over the past 24 hours, but not so much in the others. Sure smells nice in there though...

PLANS:

Intent to order another tent soon and looking at the Agromax 55x55x79. I plan to put it where the existing one is (under the HID Lamp) and move the existing tent to the right of the desk in the picture for mothers and clones. The bigger tent will be for clones and to finish them out if needed. That way I don't have to mess with the light or ventilation with the new tent- but I will have to do something with the old tent.

The 4' 6-lamp T5 fixture I have doesn't fit inside the existing tent. It is about 6" too long and therefore I cannot zip the tent all the way closed. So it looks like I am going to  have to also buy a new lamp because the only other one I have is a small 2' 2-lamp T5. I could use recommendations on not only a lamp strong enough to keep up to 4 mothers in that tent, but also how to ventilate it- hopefully somehow with what I already have going on...

25 February Update: Herebei and Jackberry at 1 month

Temp: 75.6F
RH: 53%
PH: 6.16
PPM: 330
Lamp: 1000w IPower digital at 50% power and HPS lamp.
Medium: Coco/Perlite

Posting some Herebei and Jackberry porn at the one (1) month since popping. They have yet to show their sex, but I am watching closely. I plan to keep two (2) mother's of each strain in Autopots that i'll take clones from later. I am new to growing but really happy as these look much healthier than anything I have tried before.

I've labelled them either "H" for Herebei / "J" for Jackberry and numbered them accordingly. Which one is your favorite?

Week 4 and they're so thick I'm having a hard time sexing them!
