Strokes, CBD and Ashwagandha

The combined neuroprotective and neuroregenerative potential exhibited by WS is one such strategy that might aid recovery after stroke by preventing cell death as well as stimulating repair.



Our study shows that CBD induces a substantial in vivo cardioprotective effect from ischemia that is not observed ex vivo. Inasmuch as CBD has previously been administered to humans without causing side effects, it may represent a promising novel treatment for myocardial ischemia.


Dr. Sean McCormick, a cardiac specialist, says that medical teams may one day use CBD extracts in cardiac and stroke emergency units, preventing new damage and healing existing damage. The neuroprotective effects of CBD will not only prevent the onset of debilitating symptoms from stroke or cardiac arrest but also inhibit inflammation by interacting with receptors in the body.

The study concluded that CBD has a powerful neuroprotective effect against OGDR injury caused by toxicity, energy crisis or cell metabolism disturbances. CBD prevented oxidative stress. The antioxidant defense preserved the cell bio-energy by activating the pentose-phosphate pathway and maintaining the energy equilibrium, stabilizing the neurons.

The scientists reported that CBD improved basal respiration significantly, keeping the energy and oxygen consumption rate, and capacity of cells to use glucose in OGDR-injured neurons. The Journal of Redox Biology recently published the study’s findings.



Inflammation is the body’s response to medical trauma or injury to the body. When a patient suffers from a stroke, the body undergoes a profound process of inflammation at the site where the clot or hemorrhage occurred. This inflammation is part of a wider defense mechanism that the body’s immune system activates in response to a traumatic incident.

After a stroke has occurred, the brain has substantially increased levels of inflammation and oxidation in the damaged cells. A cell receptor called TLR4 interacts with a protein called galectin-3 which causes cells to release cytokines. This causes the body to continue producing an inflammatory response even after the stroke has stopped. This seriously damages the brain cells and surrounding tissues.

CBD protects the brain after a stroke by inhibiting these various mechanisms. It naturally lowers cytokine levels and prevents the inflammatory immune response that can kill healthy brain cells. CBD is also a powerful antioxidant. These molecules are well known in nutrition for being excellent sources of health and healing for the human body. CBD’s antioxidant properties allow it to counteract excessive cellular oxidation. This also allows CBD to remove toxins and dead cells from the blood vessels.



In stroke recovery, speed is the key component to treatment. There are now two main options for treatment, both of which need to be used immediately after diagnosis. Tissue plasminogen indicator is used for ischemic strokes and endovascular surgery is used for hemorrhagic strokes. These treatments need to be applied within three hours and six hours respectively.

A therapy involving CBD would be no different, speed would be essential.  Cannabidiol has been shown to have a powerful capability to increase cerebral blood flow, which means it more quickly restores oxygen and nutrients to the areas of the brain damaged during the stroke. It is thought to be beneficial only to people who have suffered an ischemic stroke because, while it can help restore blood flow and dissipate the blood clot, it cannot help correct a ruptured artery as found in hemorrhagic strokes. Tissue plasminogen indicator is used in much the same way that CBD would be used. They both increase blood flow and help to disintegrate the clot.

Current research shows that CBD helps to improve motor skills, and cognitive ability if given shortly after the onset of symptoms. It also has been shown to offer protection to other areas of the brain, reducing the potential area of brain damage significantly. Again, this all depends on when CBD is administered because, just like with the other options, time is crucial in mitigating brain damage.

Part of the reason scientists are so enthusiastic about using CBD as a new stroke therapy is it does not have any adverse side effects and doesn’t create either tolerance or dependence in its users. It continues to offer positive neuroprotection to all cells, healthy or damaged, over long periods of time. Plus, it is known to be a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, which could offer other medicinal benefits to stroke victims.
