What are they

What are these mini little flying creatures ? What did you do to get rid of them if you had them before? Thx I’m advance. 

 

So, I was able to finger kill one and still get a picture.  They are tiny as fuck too. 

They crawl around the top of the medium and fly and land on leaves as well. 

I can’t say they do anything harmful to the plants but I rather be safe than sorry. 

I’ll bomb the basement and also room that is slated for a tent run after clean up.

hell based on google pictures and descriptions of how tiny they are i think they are fungus gnats after all. so i'll stick to the fels naptha soap spray. apparently adults don't harm anything it's the larvae that fuck with the  roots. apparently DE is supposed to work and i have used it on top of the medium when dry. which is weird since letting the soil dry out between watering should stop them from laying eggs in the soil. that's why i was thinking they weren't fungus gnats. ijs

i have stopped using the water catcher and will dump it like i did yesterday. will mos def use de a little heavier in the soil medium before using it again.  what's weird is i didn't notice them with the other plants just harvested awhile back. ijs wacko

Sounds like fungus gnats.

They are more of a nuisance than anything else, I wouldn't go nuts spraying anything unless it's not in flower. Try yellow sticky traps. If you find them flying by your face while you're doing other things around the house, you might consider beneficial nematodes. Once you buy them, if you reuse your soil, they can last for a long time. They are the most effective remedy I've tried.

Just lay dryer sheets on the soil surface.

Flyers are repelled by it and can't lay eggs through it. New hatch are trapped under it. Have used Kirkland unscented sheets since 2008 and not a single gnat indoors or out, in the tropics.

thx again. i have dyer sheets employed with 3 pots. i came back to look at how you applied the sheets. i show them in my marathon thread. looking at how you do it though, you are using more it seems and  = looks like you double the thickness ?

i wondered about just laying some on top of one of the pots and see from ur example that wasn't a good idea cause it might allow easier access.

how do you water the plants with the sheets ?

Since we gave up dryer sheets for 4-5 years now, switching to Alpaca Hair Balls, that still work great. And we buy some stuff, in the big hoarders packages, and of course, we had just bought a double package of dryer sheets, like a few years worth....never opened.

That is until reading this thread. I pack a few around inside the pot, and just water through them myself.

Fuck they stink!!

i wasn't sure if watering through them would cause any unknown adverse affects so, i actually bottom fed watered for the 1st time. i'm going to do a ph test today and move them in the basement on 24 hrs light and the flower them to collect pollen. any good tops growing out will be cloned to save 1or 2 in veg. most likely.

so they stink after you water them ? i just looked up the dryer balls and saw this VIDEO. how do you do the deploy the alpaca hair balls for plants and at what cost ?

Alpaca balls go in the dryer, with washed clothes. Dryer sheets, get placed on top of my pots, and I water down through them myself. (great tip from shoeless, I think)

I just up potted some 1 gallons to the 3 gallon pots I like to flower in. The damn things still had that god awful dryer sheet smell after a few weeks of use.

I do not think the dryer sheets kill the wee root lice, but makes them hide from the stench they give off.

It's not the stink. I use the unscented Kirkland because Bounce reeks.

Oops, told a lie. Just looked at the package. It says "gently scented".

What repels scent hunters is the cationic surfactant that does the fabric softening.

It's a waxy substance that sublimes a dryer temperature.

It also sublimes, slowly at room temperatures.

It bollixes they're scent receptors. And I lift mine to water.

Also keep some under the sink. It chases roaches! Saved me a bundle that I was paying an exterminator to, um, "control". The screen stays excellent but the surfactant eventually evaporates so I change them out monthly.

Keep using yellow sticky to monitor for flyers. If anyone her lives in lizard country, here's another tip. Encase your stickies in 1/4" hardware cloth. Trapped bugs are a buffet to geckos. They're on our side, yah?
